Update on closed parks and sports fields in Stillwater due to flooding, damage

MEDIA RELEASE

(STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA / May 31, 2019) – In light of recent flooding events, we have noticed or received several questions about the status of our local parks and scheduled sporting events through local sports leagues.

We are asking our residents to respect any barricades and signage closing a park, road or other area. Even if an area looks clear of floodwaters, it might be waiting for a safety inspection or repairs before it is reopen.

Most parks and playgrounds are open. Here are a few quick updates about open park or recreation areas.

  • Couch Park (north side): The disc golf area is open.

  • Pool at Couch Park: The pool is now open as regularly scheduled for Sunday through Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. and on Friday nights from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. for open swim. The price is $3 per person. Lap swim only is daily from 12:15 to 1 p.m. The price is $3 per person.

Below is a list of any parks or recreational areas that are currently closed.

Closed Parks

We are working with our city electric, public works, and city engineering teams, as well as our partners at Stillwater Area Sports Association (SASA), Stillwater Soccer Club and Lake McMurtry to track damages to infrastructure and to determine what repairs and staff time we need to reopen these parks.

We are working to reopen parks as soon as possible, however outside factors such as receding floodwaters, inspections, cleanup and repairs will influence the amount of time parks remain closed.

Babcock Park

We need to inspect the playground area and restrooms at Babcock Park for safety and clean them before we can reopen the park.

The ballfields and soccer fields are closed while we assess the damage and necessary repairs.

SASA has moved some of their scheduled games to Sanborn Park. Other leagues are considering other options.

The Stillwater Soccer Club is communicating with the OSU Department of Wellness and are considering alternative locations for next week’s soccer camp. Contact the Stillwater Soccer Club for updates.

You are encouraged to reach out to your league or association for questions about game locations or rescheduled events.

Lake McMurtry

Floodwaters are still affecting areas of the park. Access is limited to the lake because of a road washing out on the west side. We are working on a plan for road repairs.

Southern Woods Park

We need to inspect the playground area, splash pad and restrooms at Southern Woods Park for safety and clean them before we can reopen the park.

The softball fields will also need work before games can resume. We are in communication with Stillwater Area Sports Association (SASA) concerning the fields.

Stillwaggin’ Dog Park (at Southern Woods Park)

The dog park will remain closed until it recovers from the floodwaters.
