Trash-Off is a success thanks to volunteers

Released:Apr 04, 2018

(STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA / April 4, 2018) – Our city streets were beautified this past weekend thanks to the volunteers who attended the Stillwater Trash-Off.

This year’s event kicked off at the Stillwater Community Center on Saturday, March 31, where 86 participants gathered to help with the event.

A total of 113 bags of trash, a Christmas tree, a suitcase, 17 baseballs, a large antique clock and recyclables were collected.

“This year’s event had beautiful weather and a large turnout of youth,” said Chris Franks, environmental programs manager and coordinator of the event. "It is great to see Stillwater parents and groups teaching environmental stewardship.”

The Stillwater Bible Church group received the Trash-Off trophy for collecting 25 bags of trash on 19th Avenue between Main Street and Perkins Road. Their trophy is displayed at the Stillwater Public Library.

“I would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the volunteers who donated their time to make Stillwater a cleaner place,” Franks said.

The City began the Trash-Off 12 years ago to prevent trash from getting into waterways.

(STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA / Feb. 12, 2018) – Residents can now sign up to help pick up litter around town at this year’s City of Stillwater Trash-Off event Saturday, March 31 from 9 noon.

“This is a great service opportunity for our community,” Environmental Programs Manager Chris Franks said. “We have lots of families, students, neighborhoods and church groups who team up to help keep Stillwater clean. It’s also a chance to get verified service hours.”

Volunteers should RSVP with the number in their party by March 23 to make preparations for each group. Individuals are also welcome to participate.

Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. at the City of Stillwater Community Center, 315 W. 8th Ave. An award will be presented to the group that collects the most trash.

Hot dogs and drinks will be served at noon.

Franks said the City will also provide work gloves, safety vests and trash bags for participants.
