What We're Doing

The purpose of the project is to improve traffic flow at the intersection of State Highway 51 (6th Avenue) and U.S. Route 177 (Perkins Road) and replace the SH-51 bridges over Boomer Creek.

The roadwork is part of an Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) project to increase intersection capacity with the addition of dual left turn lanes and dedicated right turn lanes. ODOT will also make ADA improvements along pedestrian walkways, and replace or relocate some water and sewer lines at the intersection.Project PW0F01 was identified in the 2007 Stillwater Transportation Enhancement Plan (STEP). STEP was developed in 2007 to identify transportation needs and improvements within the community. 

The project was developed in coordination with ODOT. The City of Stillwater is responsible for procuring design services, purchasing rights-of-way, relocating utilities and implementing the mitigation plan. ODOT is responsible for bidding the project, paying for all construction costs and supervising construction.

The estimated construction cost of the project is $7,354,181.48.

Benefits

During peak hours, the turn lanes are insufficient to accommodate the traffic volume, causing significant traffic delay. The project will include an addition of turn lanes to the intersection of SH-51 and US-177 and the replacement of the bridge and box culvert over Boomer Creek on SH-51. The additional turn lanes will be designed to provide capacity for expected 30-year growth in traffic demand. In addition to the turn lanes, the bridge and box culvert structures have reached their useful service lives and need to be replaced.
