Cities are tasked with promoting health, safety, morals and the general welfare. To accomplish this, cities enact regulations governing certain responsibilities, which include the uses of land, densities of population and size and location of buildings. These responsibilities fall, in part, to the Planning Commission.
The Planning Commission helps direct Stillwater's development, encourages social and economic improvements in accordance with modern city planning principles and insures the orderly and efficient arrangement and development of land use projects.
Meetings are held the first and third Tuesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Hearing Room in the Stillwater Municipal Building, 723 S. Lewis St.

Zoning is the application of certain regulations and requirements on individual properties for the use of the property and the bulk standards such as building height, lot coverage, and setbacks from property lines.
The Planning Commission recommends the boundaries of the various zoning districts and appropriate regulations within each district. Changes to the zoning districts, as well as special permissions for uses within the district, are also recommendations from the Planning Commission. These actions include rezonings, specific use permits, planned unit developments and ordinance text amendments.
A comprehensive plan is a guidance document used by city leaders, developers, business owners and citizens to make decisions about future growth and development, lessening of congestion and overcrowding, preservation, and capital improvements. For Stillwater, that plan is the C3 Plan: Comprehensive Plan 2030.
The Planning Commission is charged with preparing a comprehensive plan and/or additional specific plans indicating ideas and recommendations of the Stillwater community.
The Planning Commission also oversees and develops a number of master plans to help guide community development. Visit the Document Center to view all master plans for the City of Stillwater.
The Planning Commission approves and sends recommendations to Stillwater City Council concerning the division of land, new infrastructure such as streets and sidewalks, water and sewer mains, stormwater facilities and easements necessary to serve lands.
The Planning Commission consists of seven Stillwater residents appointed by the mayor with the consent and approval of the City Council.
